Man in Uniform
Inspecting fruit at the grocer
on a Sunday afternoon
I didn’t want to bother you
though I wanted to thank you for your service
I let you have some peace
Most people don’t think to say it
a sign of the times
where comedians mock
war injuries of soldiers in Afghanistan
and POW’s —
This is America now.
I was carrying out my groceries
while trying to open the car door
and Soldier, you ran over double time
and saved me from broken glass
I thanked you aloud for your service
in every sense
you may have noticed my misty eyes
but you never let on —
you’ll go about your day
never knowing
what the uniform means to me
on a Sunday afternoon
I didn’t want to bother you
though I wanted to thank you for your service
I let you have some peace
Most people don’t think to say it
a sign of the times
where comedians mock
war injuries of soldiers in Afghanistan
and POW’s —
This is America now.
I was carrying out my groceries
while trying to open the car door
and Soldier, you ran over double time
and saved me from broken glass
I thanked you aloud for your service
in every sense
you may have noticed my misty eyes
but you never let on —
you’ll go about your day
never knowing
what the uniform means to me
