Waiting for a Nod from the Cat

Three days have passed since
I last saw that hideous creature;
his fur as coarse as my sister’s hair,
his paws as sharp as daggers-
foreshadowing my downfall.

I reluctantly walk outside,
careful not to make a sound,
but there he is, glaring at me,
with his small body and dark beady eyes
that can rip right through my soul.

My whole body is frozen with fear.
Even my legs are unable to move,
for they know the horror this creature can bring.

He begins to move:
his four legs strengthening
as he moves closer and closer to me.
His face brushes against my leg-
my body quivers and shakes as if he has attacked.

He saunters off into the next yard to bring horror and fear,
to the next kid who goes outside at the wrong time.
