the relatives hunkered into their coats
to face another ferocious winter storm
i heard them twist my pleas into mocking questions,"stay????" "stay????"
i watched their threads of green and brown and gray dissolve away
and realized that the turkey simmering in the cauldron
would sooner or later make me find a swatter
