take a breathe

we took weight in each other's hands,
and drank champagne from each other's glasses.

fight the war, take a taste,
write a song.

you sigh.

take a breath.
we peel off our plastic fingernails
like we peel the skin off overripe fruit.

porcelain girls with dyed yarn hair
and sewn velvet hearts stitched to their sleeves.

take my breath.
