Shoes

They’ve been in places and situations that you’ve never dreamed of being in
Often times they can’t believe they’ve been there themselves
They’ve seen dark and dirty places
Although they’ve seen some shadows,
They’ve seen some bright and happy faces
Each new and lovely, in its own imperfect way
They can’t control where they’re placed
In the morning, in the afternoon, at night
Although they can’t control whether the moon or sun sheds light,
They often find themselves hoping for a bright and sunny day
My shoes have walked many places
Sometimes fast, sometimes slow
Sometimes they don’t know how far they can travel
Sometimes they don’t know or care to understand
If they’ve stumbled upon a dead end or simply a crossroads
My shoes have seen many dark days and nights
My shoes have seen many reassuring smiles and embraces
They sometimes feel left out because they’re always near my shadow
My heart seems to constantly reassure them that they’re near the dark - my shadow - for a reason
My shoes sometimes tell me that they’re exhausted and worn out
They think the exhaustion will fade
After a new day
After a recent wash in the washing machine
Hundreds of new days can pass
My shoes can be thrown in the washing machine time and time again
Days can pass and they can be washed,
But they will have always traveled in dark and dirty places
