While You Sleep
Your body beside me
swaying with the tide
of your breath.
In and out.
Your eyes swirl
in delirious sleep.
I kiss your forehead gently.
I won't wake you.
You're an angel lying next to me.
i'm the devil
burning myself out.
While you rest,
I sneak outside.
I hate to leave you.
The moon welcomes me
with a cool grin.
You sigh gently
as the door closes.
I light my cigarette.
Smoke billows around me
on the evening wind.
Bare feet on black top
and I bathe in moonbeams.
I wonder why I'm here
wounding myself on the sharp edges of the night.
I draw the moon down to me.
Carry it inside.
Swallow it whole.
I wrap myself in your embrace.
and in your sleep
your arms envelope me.
I hear you whisper,
'home'
and we shine
in the cool light, together
where we belong.
