The Derby Girls

You want it rough?

Careful,
you might flinch.

Scrunched up face
the inevitable blow
faced by the jammer
gaining speed
and slammed
skidding across the concrete.

This is no dainty-wristed affair,
this is intense.

Rolling on the wheels of the seventies
- a versatile collection of ladies
tongue-in-cheek personas
and outlandish outfits
-fishnets and mouthguards.

No matter the size,
the bravery and endurance
will give their bodies a serious pounding.

And when the game is won,
the pads removed
and the bruising begins
they will return to a mediocrity
until the next match.
