Image for the poem So Dark

So Dark

It should have never ended that way
Truths more horrific than secrets
Father never knew his shadow

The dark stories under every town
Hard to see,  harder to accept
The brightest lights burn fastest

No surprise your diversion into drugs
your midnight forays of careless sex
to assert control of lone moments

Deep tones of unspeakable terror
even worst realizations of family
violations that break psyches

A monster of two minds make them meet
overwhelming despair for one
while the stronger howls laughter

The last night in that crazy-lit boxcar
the other escaped, beaten, dazed
but your sad fate was painfully sealed

Cries resounding in misty forest air
tears and blood a final mask
The night as dark as it gets

I never knew you but loved you deeply
wrapped in plastic, set afloat
more at peace than ever in life
