I Should Have Known

Where did it all go wrong....      
She was  young and vulnerable
And yet we hit it off    
She relaxed in my company
Our loving was intense.
Our ages were so far apart
Yet our friendship bloomed.
I lived with all her foibles,
And when she let me down
Her excuses were all accepted
Without a pang of doubt.
Our relationship so continued
For six years and more,
Until she moved away.
Now that she has returned
I sit awaiting her texts
I guess I should have known.
