The Love Affair of Tad and Elizabeth--final days--30,31,32,33,34,35,36,37 and 38
DAY 30 --IN EL PASO--THE NISSAN GETS A NEW SET OF TIRES, THE LOVERS CONSIDER A NEW DISGUISE, AND A COLLISION ALMOST HAPPENS
While waiting for the tires to be installed, Tad and Elizabeth moved a bit off the tire store grounds towards the sidewalk, where they strolled about, aimlessly, getting in a lot of smooching at sudden moments.
Tad's face was still completely shaven. Elizabeth missed the feel of his goatee.
"What if I grow a very thin pencil mustache?"
"No."
"Ok, what if I grow the goat again and walk a dog? Wherever I went.THAT would throw people off, They wouldn't associate me with the Tad Cummins all over the papers and TV. They'd never put the two together."
Elizabeth chuckled. "Are you serious?"
"And maybe sport a slouch hat, angle it 'just so.' "
"Oh now you're getting crazy."
They soon took possession of the car and headed east again on highway 10 when a speeding car almost side swiped the Nissan. "Goddamn!" they cursed, watching the red Jaguar disappear fast as a streak of lightning.
An eventful day it was,
new tires, a near collision and pondering a man's fuzz.
DAY 31--DRIVING AND THINKING
Tad thought about his old passport he had packed for the Mexico adventure in case he had to bluff his way out of a jam. It was long expired and showed a man much younger than a 50-year-old. It was stamped June 6, 1991 Victoria B.C. when he and Jill took a vacation in Canada. Maybe when he arrived in Miami he could get the criminal elements there to refashion it into a workable document. Or maybe in Key West he'd bribe a fisherman to carry Elizabeth and himself across the gulf into Havana. .
He was playing with longshots, grabbing at straws
while fearing the grave consequences of breaking the laws.
DAY 32--WHILE DRIVING AND THINKING CONT.
"Shall we go home?" Tad asked.
"Are you serious?"
"I've been thinking about it."
"Chicken!" Elizabeth snapped.
"Do you really mean that?"
"Of course not. But I've been thinking about it too. But I couldn't live without our regular fucking."
"Me either, my precious. Happy Easter and promise me if you don't want to continue the trip, tell me. We'll turn ourselves in."
"It's a deal," Elizabeth said.
O! To know the secret thoughts of your lover
like you know the secret terrain of her body under covers.
DAY 33--AT CRUISE SPEED
Passing through San Antonio, memories of their derring-do in that city a few weeks ago returned like hearing the plucks of a resplendent, though hesitant harp.
Then some of the way to Austin, the car windows were rolled down to help the hot Texas sun dry Elizabeth's black mane she had shampooed earlier, in the restroom of a gas-stop.
Tad mused:It's been a long road trip, cross country twice, but after all so very nice!
:DAY 34--HEADING TOWARDS HOUSTON AND THE SOUTH
Elizabeth got the hiccups. Tad bought a small package of granulated sugar, told her to swallow it straight She was cured.
Tad said, "We've been eating from these fast-food joints too much. We need some real healthy meals for a change."
Lovers looking-after one another
is like saying I've got your back covered.
DAY 35--DRIVING AND SLEEPING AND FUCKING
Every city newspaper screamed the headlines: WAS IT A PRANK? KIDNAPER AND VICTIM SEND GREETINGS WITH GIFT--TBI CAN'T CONFIRM AUTHENTICITY
Tired, depressed and not a little "spent," they checked into the nearest motel and slept like death.
DAY 36--THE SPORTING LIFE?
dipping their toes in the Mississippi
Then onward to a park in Lafayette, Louisiana for
arm wrestling
push-ups--15 for Tad
20 for Elizabeth
a race to the drinking fountain--a tie
The car wheels keep turning and turning
as the mind keeps inventing new yearnings.
DAY 37--RELAXING IN BATON ROUGE
"Do you think I'd make a good Southern Belle?" Elizabeth said. enjoying her double fudge ice cream cone on the terrace of a Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors.
"With your petite stature and self effacing ways--perfect."
"Both my mother and I loved Gone With The Wind."
"The movie or the book?" Tad asked, finishing off his strawberry cone.
"Both. She kept a large size paper copy of the book, dog eared with color pages from the movie, loose half detached. It was sometimes on our coffeetable."
"Yes I recall seeing that there sometimes. My tastes run more to the Southern modern age--Carson McCullers, Flannery O'Connor,Tennessee Williams....".
Elizabeth thought of her mother, was glad she was away from her
who for the smallest infraction beat her like a dirty cur.
DAY 38--IN NEW ORLEANS
They had just walked out of the famed Antoine's restaurant after dinner when two well dressed men approached, one flashing a TBI badge and asking, "You Tad Cummins?"
"Yes sir."
"You're under arrest. Tennessee Bureau of Investigation."
"I'm glad this is over," Tad said.
He surrendered without struggle.
