My Gift to You

My Gift to You

Lying on my back in a grass filled lawn,
the stars above me in the night time sky,
hold my attention as I close my eyes.
For the final time, I say goodbye.

The sun rises bold and bright.
You open the door and are struck with fright.
My cold, dead body has been in your yard all night.
This is my gift to you, does it feel right?

You search in vain to find a note.
All you find is my slit throat.
Tears pour out of your eyes as you remember my quote,
“My own hand will end my life,” is what I wrote.

You hold my body and say your final goodbye.
Tears continue to fall until your eyes are dry.
You wish you would have taken my quote seriously but I was high.
You never knew my death was night.

You call the authorities to report my death.
It’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done.
Once that job is done you take a breath,
sit on your chair still completely stunned.

The world you knew has changed forever.
You want to move on, but know the day that will happen is never.
You wish you had one more chance to tell me your feelings.
The love you shared with me is within me forever.

With sorrow and guilt consuming your soul,
I come to you and hug you one final time.
Whisper quietly in your ear,
“My body is my gift to you.”
