Wile Away

Midnight Rider
Takes me back
I was too young
To know what I was talking about
Still
I drove across America
With blues on my back
Having given up
What I was searching for
That was to be discovered later
Texas changed
Before my eyes
Mind you, after Austin
The vast desert
Blew my mind
It seemed to go on
Forever
As I gassed up
With one more silver dollar
Hanging with cowboys
Who never rode a horse
It could have been worse
We all pretended
Me in my Pontiac LeMans
Them on a line dance
Searching for the girl
Who never gave them a chance
Eventually Arizona
Without a nickle or dime to my name
I couldn't die
Unlike Lynard Skynard
Murdered in my mind
Like so many rock stars
Before their time
Flashed before me
In an assembly
Of false states
Of unwanted journeys
Of contrived fates
Of what was in store
I see it now
All the slime
In retrospect
Things weren't how I perceived them
I now suspect
My journey
Was crept into me
