Names, what are the meaning?
some are humble, some are demeaning
They use to be something we are simply called
but now some seem to be appalled
Names can be a form of praise
names could also be a way to haze
They have caused many conflicts
from school to streets to politics
Why has society changed its representation
to make kind words into a different interpretation
Why can't names be less of a label and be more kind
and less unstable and more refined

In ancient times, your name was your being. As long as your name was respected and honored, your life was more or less pointless. Names were chosen carefully, and held extreme value to them. We were never simply called, but were always of power.
However, even though historically it was never simple, in childhood it was. We never used words with such weight and purpose as children. In older age, it appears strange for names to be given such value. It is a custom given onto us from the ancients, and is meant to give us meaning and direction. A name points towards a direction of life that the parents intended for the subject to follow.
Many people desire names that do not have such scathing or sacred meaning. Words are words, why must we infuse it with intent as to reject or idolize? To demonize or deify?
We can only hope that our names will be simpler, and for that I enjoy this poem knowing the confused child within me would cry this in his sleep.
