Sexless and penniless

"Those cheap, stained shirts and cigarettes
leave little to be desired."
Roger smirked as he used a sketcher hand,
such an easy stitch,
with a switch
blade to cut the apple he keeps
in his left pocket beside all his modesty.

She smiles
with the buck teeth,
looks like Buggs Bunny,
humming in the kitchen
around her cigarette
and fresh-washed curls,
the colour of fury.
"Chin up chicken."

But they can't afford
the smiles and banter.
The rent is due and it's not slowing
and the heavenly smoke pours from her
pouting lips
with endless positivity to dare
where she perhaps shouldn't.

Modesty comes in Roger's left pocket
beside the rotting apple
and the rusty switch
blade but he's an easy stitch,
for her and Roger draws her with his sketcher hand.
"Those cheap, stained shirts and cigarettes
leave everything to be desired."
