Dreams Lay Shattered

All our dreams gone down in flames,
Just because of your stupid games.
Didn't tell me you were engaged,
to Alcohol and his sister, Cocaine.
Now our dreams lie shattered
in the dust,
All because of addiction-lust.
I cannot stand it, I cannot stay,
I barely make it through each day.

Your substance abuse takes over
and the chemicals are your only lover.
Weekends put me in constant dread,
knowing you'll lay in your mistresses bed.
Maybe not this weekend, but probably soon,
Our relationship is one of darkening gloom.

Why didn't you tell me?
Oh, wait, I know the answer well.
I'd have left, if you dared tell.
Tell me of this mistress you have,
that you go back to when you need a salve.
To ease  some strange, invisible pain,
You swear to quit, but you fall again.

I don't care what they say in the meetings,
against a brick wall your head you keep beating.
After every binge, filled with remorse,
Yet you never stay on the program's course.

There's nothing left of our dreams and hopes,
scattered, battered, and shattered,
on the ground they lay.
It's with the devil you like to play,
and someday, he'll make you pay.

I dread that for you, I really do,
because the devil will have his due.
But I won't be here to watch you pay.
Serenity cannot be found, for your
mistress is stuck to you like glue.
