Teenage Divorce
recallin’ my juke-joint days
snapping my finger
to the beat
ridin’ down dark gravel roads
in dad’s Mercury
got my girlfriend by my side
headed for that special place
where we can hide
into the backseat we tumble
in a little while
we were rocking that old car like thunder
eh, memories are so fine
what you can’t recall
you can cut into it
so everything will fit
ah, when I saw her I knew
into the backseat
we would very soon be
I put her under the wheel
of that old Merc
needed two hands to grope
don’t ya know
the moon was shinning brightly
new moon
new love to guide us by
I had Bill Haley singing in one ear
she whispering sweet things
in the other
the sound of your whisper
makes its own music
putting Bill Haley to shame
yes . . .
this is where we belong
later . . .
I’m back under the wheel
taking her home
her dad standing in the yard
huge arms folded
’cross his chest
I come to a rolling stop
reach across her
open the door
she steps out
I floorboard the petal
to the metal
and roar away
this, sadly to say
is what is known as a
teenage divorce
