Heartache and Heartbreak
We began in a blaze
of chain smoke and haze
nights spent in a tree
where we pretended we were free.
We giggled at the stars
and the lights of passing cars
and we loved.
We loved the moon and the dew
and when I stop and think of you,
it's all gone. The tree burned down
and the adults did more than frown
you moved from country to the city
like some fucking country ditty
and we loved.
Secret calls in the dark
some were clothed, some were stark
and the adults never knew
that I still talked to you
until the yearly phone bill came around
now my cellphone's wet and drowned
and we love.
I'll send letters after school
wait for the postie by the pool.
Read your words till I cry
because our love has to die.
There's nothing I can do
except maybe run away to you
and I love.
