My Best Friend
My best friend, silent
In his concentration, then consternation
As a puzzle piece fails to reveal itself
So he carries on trying, and I carry on lying
About all my little affections
We trudge through the failing, sodden leaves
I follow him through the mulch, ever the faithful hound
Even in sneakers, I'd walk a little quicker
Just to catch the tail end of his asteroid flying overhead
Or brush our stinging lips; nettles winding into each other
My best friend, quiet
With the grace and shyness of the great impala
He of the land of many whispering waters
And trees, tall and lanky in their likeness of him
They both stand tall in the wind
