The Last Stand

I’ve watched the sun kiss a thousand clouds
how long must I wait for you?

tongue-tied, beseeched, avowed
how far must I strain for you?

once drunk in endless light
now starving in your shadow

it lingers beyond farewell
leaving all earthly things fallow

fire creeps along my veins
heat wells within my heart
once I was on your side
now I long to tear you apart

there’s nothing left to write
words fail me
adrift in a barren sea
I’m flailing
poised to dread the coming rains
and thunder
fearing this has been our last stand

racing behind my brow
empty dreams preoccupy

what was, what is, and what will be
tremble and ossify

fires creep along my veins
heat wells within my heart
once I was on your side
now I long to tear you apart

there’s nothing left to write
words fail me
adrift in a barren sea
I’m flailing
poised to dread the coming rains
and thunder
fearing this has been our last stand
