Swinging Tree

Silence rings out throughout the crowded square
A breeze ripples through pressed bodies at the fair
The men and women look up to the platform
The calm before the tempest storm
And in an instant the silence is hushed
As the platform is opened and a life is crushed

There are some shouts of glory and glee
It’s another victory it seems
A fire is extinguished
And a flame is brought to life
As the martyr swings beneath the gallows
