I find people also give way when facing an oncoming cripple in a chair - I still find it funny :-)

The unpredictability of cripples in chairs is legendary... zooming this way and that, tripping people up etc.
Pity a light-weight aluminium crutch doesn't have the same effect. The know too well if I beat them with it I wouldn't have a leg to stand on...
