The Candle
How can you love a shadow?
Cling to something you can't hold?
A moment brighter than the sun,
Of Destiny foretold.
Who can say where the wind will blow?
What tomorrow might find?
I lay the pieces, one by one,
To the altar of my mind.
Would I change it had I known?
Would the words purse on my lips?
Or would that soulsame touch have died
Beyond these fingertips.
The essence sinking like a stone,
I close my eyes to hold on.
All tribute to senses denied,
To a single candle drawn.
Till the last of dreams, like ashes,
Soul wakened to price of trust,
In a flicker of wind fall away
To be sifted with the dust.
Tomorrow just a bastion
To the hope I'll never find.
I snuff the flame and turn away
From the altar of my mind.
