Sestina - 'Aurora'
What beauty on her face doth shine
As she lay in slumber, here;
Soft hands clasped o’er supple breast,
Golden hair ne’er out of place
Untouched for a thousand years,
Etern’lly perfect, lovely; clean.
Though my thoughts be pure and clean –
(Brightly doth my honour shine),
Returned to her I have, for years,
Standing guard over her, here
In this hidden, sacred place,
With my helmet at my breast.
Her altar-bed three foot a-breast,
Of polished stone, flawless and clean;
Whoever cursed her did gently place
Her body where the sun would shine
And keep her lovely features here,
To sleep immortal through the years.
And through all my many years,
Knight’s heart leaping from my breast,
I have watched o’er her here
Kept her virtue pure and clean.
For one day she’ll awake and shine
Her eyes on me, and know my place.
As her true love, her hand she’ll place
In mine, and we shall live our years
In wedded bliss – our love will shine
Bright as the sun, and on her breast
I’ll lay my head of worries clean,
And until then, I stay right here.
I speak to her in case she’ll hear
And on her brow, soft kiss I place
Most innocently, chaste and clean.
Though tempted I have been these years;
To lay hand on her creamy breast
Would tarnish her angelic shine.
Our love shall shine so bright, the Heav’ns will hear,
From within love’s breast, we’ll create the most divine place;
And spend etern’ty in bliss gentle, clean.
