The Un-enlisted War

Little boy six years old
Quiet and shy
Always Doing what he's told
And every Friday
He covers himself in red
No it don't matter if it's November or May
He takes time out to
Remember Everyone Deployed
So one sunny afternoon the teacher asks
Just what does it mean to him
Because he's too young to know fear
And his loving heart
Has never felt the sting of death,
But after a long hard breath
She can't help but be impressed
When he says

(Chorus 1)
"My Daddy just went away
To a very scary place called
Hell
And I'm soo scared
But I swore I would not tell
Because my Mommy,
Yeah she really loves him
And she needs me to be strong
'Cause every night that he's gone
I can hear her crying
Wonderin' if this will be the last time
She'll ever getta say goodbye
And he told me
You don't need an
AK-47 in Heaven
Oh, no (pause)
You don't need an
AK-47 in Heaven
Mmm-hmmm

The young woman reached out
To hold her brave student's hand
She's overcome with emotion at the
Strength of his conviction
She's searching for a way to lessen his burden
And when that bell rings
She knows it's time
She taught her kids a different lesson
So she pulls him in tight
And reveals a side of herself
That she's been keeping hidden outta sight
For far too long
'Cause she may be young
But she's seen a whole lot in the
Three tours that she's fought
And even though the memories,
They still haunt her,
She's honored not to be
Forgot

(Chorus 2)
For every Brother and Sister
Who stood beside me
And all those who have
Fought and Fell
Before me
From the
Great War to Afghanistan,
Juno Beach to Iraq,
Vietnam to the Homeland
May we
Never Forget
The oh so many that came to rest
Row upon row
In Normandy
Yeah I've taken to the streets,
Hid in wait in the mountains high
Just trying not to think
Whether or not I was gonna die
Because I know
You don't need an
AK-47 in Heaven
Oh, no (pause)
You don't need an AK-47
In Heaven
Mmm-hmmm

Three days later little Emily Grey
Came to school wearing a messed up dress,
Bloodshot eyes
And you could tell she'd been cryin'
But before the teacher could ask
Her what had happened
Emily passed her a folded up note
And just walked away to take her seat
And began to pray
For her
Sister to be safe
Then continued her day
Trying hard to hide the pain
From a broken heart
Eight hours later
The Teacher finally reads the letter
And burst into tears when she read

(Chorus 3)
My Grandpa stormed the beaches of Juno
And wrote about all the
Pretty flowers beside all the
Fallen members
Row on row
And I know I'm not ready
To know what it feels like to be kind of
Hero
But I wish I could
Meet him just one last time
Just so I could show him
How much he really means to me
But I don't know
Normandy
Oh, no (pause)
No, no
I don't know
Normandy
Could you teach me?
Mmm-hmmm

(Outro)
My Daddy just went away
To a very scary place called
Hell
And I'm soo scared
But I swore I would not tell
