The Knowing

Absolute wonder filled me that summer day
When she walked up the drive with my roommate’s girlfriend
She had a smile like the sun as it slowly rose up after a cold clear night
Dancing shyly on the horizon before blazing to life and filling the sky
And a storm cloud of dark chocolate hair that fell long in a crashing wave
She smiled again and pulled another smile out of me, my heart dancing
And I was lost for what seemed eternity
We chatted until chat turned to talk and talk to that lightest touch on my arm
It shared the news that she was losing herself just the same as I
When they left to go hours later we shared a kiss that promised
Deeper knowledge to come
I think that I was already in love when I look back now
At the days and the nights
The days of wandering the city we both knew but had never seen together
Those nights of discovery and finding we already knew each other somehow
In some deep way beyond knowing how but just being known
The ecstasy and sweat, laughter and joy of it all comes to life in my mind
And wonder fills me up once again
I smile somehow sad and filled with joy all the same
And I know…
