'Cause it's Cliched to be Cynical at Christmas

It's a cold and dark December night,
that hides the city from my sight,
but the market square is ringed with light,
and the people around me are laughing.

There's music playing, low and sweet,
and fallen snow whitens the street,
an empty canvas, a brand new sheet
of paper to paint a life on.

The air is rich with sweet and spice
the ground below is slick with ice,
the stalls and wares the folk entice,
above us, the tree stands sentry.

I see the girl who's standing there,
new snowflakes decorate her hair,
I never saw one half so fair
or so able to entice me.

Around her neck a scarf of red,
she looks at me with tilted head;
if beauty killed, she'd strike me dead
and I'd hit the ground still smiling.

Her eyes on mine, I take her hand
and pull her close, like that we stand;
a moment perfect, so unplanned,
it's the line between chaos and grace.

My thoughts, she's said, are mine to know -
we both know that she's guessed them though -
she's left me no way left to go,
and my mind's ablaze as we stand there.

I bow my head and cross the line,
capture her soft lips with mine,
as Christmas lights around us shine,
and the world is set on fire.

I feel her tense in my embrace,
our hearts both beat a rapid pace.
Will this be the chaos, or the grace?
And is there any difference?

And then she softens, presses near,
her kiss so hot my lips could sear,
her body 'gainst me quells my fear,
as the world spins on around us.

The world around us fades away
as snowflakes dance their white ballet.
Together we hold the cold at bay,
as though no-one else existed.

The people 'round us slip from thought,
likewise the scene of lamplight wrought,
in our embrace my mind is caught,
and there's naught in the world could free it.

Now in that cold December night,
there stands my princess, and I her knight.
We disregard the square of lights,
the falling snow that yet alights,
heed not the landscape soft and white -
we are lost in one another.
