Beautiful Storm
She sits rocking in a corner clasping her knees against her chest. Her eyes are squeezed shut and she keeps mumbling something under her breath.
“Just look at me!’’ he shouts above the storm that’s raging around them. “You need to look at me so this will stop!”
Still nothing. The wind is getting worse. Funny how this was the one thing that attracted him to her. The very tornado that was attempting to rip him limb from limb used to be like a warm summer’s breeze that sung a lullaby, rocking to sleep the restless corners of his heart.
“Don’t love me, I’m a storm. The very parts of me that you fall in love with will destroy you”, she’d warned him before.
He had not believed her. Sure she had a few showers of sorrow now and again, but who doesn’t? She was broken, but so was he.
“Please, just look at me.”
Nothing. Suddenly, he is flung against a tree by one of the wind’s mighty arms and he struggles, trying to gasp for air as it strangles him before throwing him to the ground.
“I’m not worthy, I’m not worthy…” She mumbles over and over, still rocking, her eyes staring emptily at the ground.
“Yes, yes you are” he manages to whisper while slowly crawling towards her.
He’s grown weak from this battle but refuses to give up. “Remember when we first met, I was such a jerk, and everyone hated me, except you. You saw something in me that even I didn’t see in myself”
she blinks for the first time as the memory flashes before her eyes.
“Yes” she whispers.
He urges closer to her, “You always had a way of making me smile…always so happy and full of life…always putting others first even when they didn’t deserve it. Remember when I had my episode a few months ago and you came running to me at 3 a.m.? No one has ever done something like that for me, Ruby. Let me love you. Let me be here for you now.”
He’s right beside her now, waiting for her to respond. She turns her ahead slowly towards him and looks at him with glazed eyes.
“Okay” she just manages to whisper.
The thunder and lightning slowly die down as she lies on the ground on a pieces of debris and rolls herself into a ball. He pulls her into his arms and covers her like a protective cocoon.
“Don’t leave me” she whispers into his chest. “I won’t. You’re my beautiful storm” he whispers kissing the crown of her head.
The tornado slowly turns into a warm breeze, singing them a lullaby and rocks them both to sleep.
