Masking tape label
I struggled to throw it away,
The empty package with my name
My name and the date in black marker ink
On a torn piece of masking tape label
Staring at black marker scribble,
I pondered how something so simple
caused sadness to spill down my cheeks
while bringing a smile to my face
In the minute it takes to fashion a label,
I know I crossed your mind for a fraction
You've been gone for over a year,
Three more from the date written under my name
I know how you would be laughing,
rolling your eyes at my silly reaction
Over a label I found stuck on plastic
It hardly seems a momentum for passing
There was a time, I inclined to agree
These days I am more sentimental
What once would be trash,
my grief turns to treasure
I keep it so I won't forget
that one particular second
My dad was thinking of me
While writing my name
On a masking tape label dated
