And the Candle Burns

Bright spark of ignition.
Light creeps off of table's edge
brushing dusty, granite walls
and the candle burns.

Tall and lean, unblemished wax
youthful promise of plenty.
Darkness knows no ally
and the candle burns.

Established, steady, even flame
accompanying whisper warmth
bringing comfort to the gathered
and the candle burns.

Weary flare now withdrawn
as wax wrinkles, warping,
only traces of pillar past remain,
and the candle burns
out.
