Falling in Love with a Wonderful Person (Who Doesn't Love You Back)
A Wonderful Person will walk into your life and turn it upside down in a wonderful way.
You will remember what it feels like to feel special.
A Wonderful Person will make you realize that you don’t feel “worthy” of certain wonderful things in life,
And that it’s not okay to feel that way.
A Wonderful Person will want to know every detail about you.
From your earliest memory,
To the angst-filled songs you listened to on repeat in 8th grade.
A Wonderful Person will want to hear the bad poetry you wrote on receipts and envelopes and scrap paper all through high school.
A Wonderful Person will listen and support you when you tell him about the time you moved 7 hours away from your hometown
To be with a man who told you,
after 3 years,
a miscarriage,
a house,
and countless promises,
That he knows how to make you happy,
But can’t bring himself to do it.
A Wonderful Person will understand why this man is still a friend,
And will accept him with a genuine handshake, eye contact, and all of the wonderfulness that he has shown you.
A Wonderful Person will drink wine, talk, and fall asleep on the floor with you in your new apartment before you even have furniture.
A Wonderful Person will never complain about this.
A Wonderful Person will cancel plans with friends once in a while because he is enjoying your long talk too much to interrupt it.
A Wonderful Person will hold eye contact with you for a second too long.
He will learn how to communicate with you nonverbally,
Through glances across crowded rooms,
Or through middle of the night texts,
And long emails, hugs, and the occasional walk in the city, arm in arm or hand in hand.
A Wonderful Person will walk your sister to the train station so she doesn't have to walk alone,
And so you don't have to worry about her.
A Wonderful Person will make playlists for you,
Send you pictures of things that remind him of you.
He will remember your pets names,
Your mom’s favorite store,
Your dad's favorite songs,
And the horrible memories you carry around about the time you almost lost your brother.
A Wonderful Person will remember what days you have therapy, and what time,
And he will never forget to wish you luck before, and check on you after.
A Wonderful Person will surprise you over and over with that kind of attentiveness.
A Wonderful Person will show you the kind of love that you thought only existed in your own heart.
Falling in love with a Wonderful Person will make it seem like everything else in your life has fallen into place since meeting him.
Falling in love with a Wonderful Person will fill you with a purpose,
A sense of pride.
An appreciation for the sunset, the sunrise, the Verrazano Bridge,
The way the summer air smells,
And childlike excitement for things like perfect sushi rolls,
Modern Family DVDs on sale,
3 dollar bottles of wine at Trader Joe's,
The long awaited November day that Wegmans puts out their Pumpkin Soup every year,
And 1 dollar well drinks after 10PM on Tuesdays at your favorite dive bar.
You will share all of these wonderful moments with your Wonderful Person
willingly,
enthusiastically,
and with pride.
Your Wonderful Person will remind you of every wonderful memory you have made since you met him,
And there will be many
And these memories won't leave, even when your wonderful person does.
A Wonderful Person will challenge you to be more open and honest than you ever thought you could be.
A Wonderful Person will inspire you without even realizing it.
A Wonderful Person will stand by your side as you start to come out of your shell
And grow into your skin.
A Wonderful Person will make you want to improve any warped ways of thinking
that you have acquired over the years,
Both for your own sake, and for his.
A Wonderful Person will notice this,
And will also make efforts to improve himself and his interaction with you.
A Wonderful Person will feel you falling in love with him.
A Wonderful Person will address it.
A Wonderful Person will be honest about his feelings, even if he knows it will hurt you.
A Wonderful Person will tell you that he is...mind, body, and soul...
In love with someone from his past.
A Wonderful Person will be sitting at the bar by himself after you excuse yourself to cry in the bathroom over what will never be.
Deep down, you have known all along that your Wonderful Person is just as broken as he is wonderful.
A Wonderful Person loves hard.
A Wonderful Person will not move on just for the hell of it, or just because he met someone new, no matter how strong this new connection is.
A Wonderful Person would never feel right about exploring new love while old love lingers.
A Wonderful Person will not try with you if there is a possibility of him failing.
But a Wonderful Person will still be your best friend, and will invite you to Thanksgiving with his mom.
A Wonderful Person will sleep in your bed with his clothes on.
A Wonderful Person will respect you, the situation, and the bond the two of you have built.
A Wonderful Person knows that physical intimacy will complicate things even more.
A Wonderful Person would not want you to feel used.
A Wonderful Person won’t kiss you,
Even if he really, really wants to.
A Wonderful Person will still appreciate your beauty, and your sex appeal,
And all the subtle things you do,
Like the way you twirl that one section of your hair between your thumb and your pointer finger,
The way you rub your forearm when you talk to them,
The way you bite your lip when you’re thinking,
Or the way your bangs graze your eyelashes whenever you look down in sadness over what will never be.
You will tell yourself over and over that such a Wonderful Person is worth waiting for.
But A Wonderful Person will start to notice changes in you,
a lack of patience.
A Wonderful Person will address this.
A Wonderful Person would never want to be the reason that you put your life on hold.
A Wonderful Person will encourage you to move on,
Even if they love spending every day with you,
And genuinely enjoy and appreciate everything the two of you share.
A Wonderful Person will know that you, too, are a wonderful person,
And deserve to have all of the love you are capable of giving,
reciprocated.
A Wonderful Person will want you to do what's best for you, even if it hurts him.
A Wonderful Person won't hate you for taking a step away from the friendship
In order to save your own heart.
A Wonderful Person will be a very difficult person to lose.
A Wonderful Person will be close to impossible to get over.
Your Wonderful Person didn’t do anything you could be angry about.
Without anger,
Letting go is a much slower process.
You will have to train yourself to go against your instincts.
When something horrible happens in your life, you will want to call and tell your Wonderful Person,
And you will know that your Wonderful Person would want you to. But...
You won’t call.
You won’t tell them.
This will make the recent horrible occurrence in your life
even worse.
When something wonderful happens in your life, you will want to call and tell your Wonderful Person, and you will know that your Wonderful Person would want you to.
But you won’t call, and you won’t tell them.
This will make the recent wonderful occurrence in your life
a little less wonderful.
A little less wonderful:
Like you feel inside,
Like you view the world,
Love,
And life
Without your Wonderful Person.
