Praying for an Easy End

It need not be a thing to be feared
Death might persuade any number of elements
to grant us a peaceful transition

To merely lift weightlessly into the midnight sky
ever up and away
Sleeping into the upper atmosphere
until the air is too thin and you suffocate

Silently, never for a moment waking
you could drift out on the dark sea
letting the tides pull you further and further from shore
as you float, mostly submerged, soundlessly
peacefully until you slip beneath the surface
with only a few bubbles to mark your passing

You could walk a darkened path
through the thickest forest, fog swirling around your steps
The landscape is quiet and offers no menace
Fairy lights guide your way as you sleepwalk forward
Deep earthy scents fill your nostrils, connecting you to the land
Your destination is established
An unlit cabin at the end of the trail
Within, a soft bed for a weary traveler
The blanket, a shroud with your name

And last, because fire takes no one calmly, the opposite is used
A gradual chill that takes you so slowly
by the time you can't feel your extremities any longer
you realize that soon you won't need them anyway
You continue steadfast to the promise of impending heat
although knowing you wont quite make it
Your body slowly shuts off with a final vapor exhale

It's okay, no violent endings, no prolonged illnesses
no unexpected mistake, no undo suffering
The elements can be tools of Death when she'e feeling merciful
