A Question of Faith
Philosophical
Belief in dogma
Word of God or man?
I'm a man constantly in search of an answer
And the question is one I'm not even sure can be asked
At least not by those who cling to life as their eternal dream
And I wonder, am I worthy of the answer while living the dream?
To know the answer would leave my soul defenseless
As would being trapped beneath the shadow of doubt
The paradox within my soul is a question of faith
But for the sins I've embraced, I question my fate.
A lifetime of doubt induced by human fallibility
incredulous claims of impossibility
Miracles and parables dancing hand in hand
Creating skepticism between every grain of sand.
Knowledge, a deceptive act of treason
Picked from apples eaten out of season
If I consume the truth of the One above
Deeper yet will I fall from eternal love?
It may be true that more than one truth exists
And that each and every person sees their own
But after this life on Earth is over and done
Is that still true, or is there only one?

Stark and bare in the telling. Could hear Metallica's "Unforgiven" in my mind as I read through this masterful piece. So walking the same road as you, JJ. Very well done in the telling. RL add :)

Thanks for commenting Michael! I'm going to have to wander over to youtube and check out the video for "Unforgiven", not sure if I've ever seen it. This is an old poem I decided to resurrect and update with some new lines. I wrote the original over 30 years ago and have written numerous other poems on the topic of faith. Having grown up a Catholic, I have all sorts of religious issues and frequently ponder the concept of faith and my fate. JJ

love the poem, especially love the last stanza - I think everyone has in essence their own truth and that truth begins and ends with them - this of course exclude the brainwashed and religiously dogmatic

Very true David, unless of course there is a God and he turns out to be the one in the Christian Bible, as no matter what truths we may all have, the only one that will matter will be his/hers/it's... having been very nearly brainwashed in Catholic school, church, and by my family, I feel somewhat lucky to have retained most of my individuality, but I still have just enough fear of God to make me doubt my doubts. For all to talk of God's love, it seems strange that anyone should be "God fearing" or have the fear of God in them. You would think God would give us at least a clue that he exists, rather than expecting us to have faith in words passed down from men with questionable motives. What if 2000 years go by after the next great war and someone finds a copy of my book "Seeds and Weeds" and they think they found the next new testament? How messed up will the world be then?
