We Don't Factor The Cost

A poet takes to the pen
not certain which seed will be sown
interpretation runs wide
and some birds already have flown
still an addictive curse
come back time and time again
a behavior most comfortable
possessing the wisdom to know where to end?

"If we burn our wings
flying too close to the sun
if the moment of glory
is over before it's begun
if the dream is won
though everything is lost
we will pay the price,
but we will not count the cost"

If we tracked the cause
of the greed and the strife
what prompts a human
to sacrifice the rest of a life
a nation state rolls on
hands given silver and gold
extermination an expert's game
snuffing out life and remaining cold

"When the dust has cleared
and victory denied
a summit too lofty
river a little too wide
if we keep our pride
though paradise is lost
we will pay the price,
but we will not count the cost"
