MIKEY AND MIKAYLA
Mikey and mikayla were the best of friends,
Neither trial or tribulation could cause their bond to bend,
Mikey was her constant, mikayla was his rock,
Until one day tie changed the ticking of the clock,
How so? you wonder, well the answers not that simple,
Both mikey and mikayla share the same temple,
Both he and she share the same conscience,
Yet he and she are no longer bonded,
Why? mikey battles that question in the shadows at night,
While mikayla spends her days in tears over this plight,
He wonders about the possibilities of being true to himself,
While she continues as s shell living the life of someone else,
He's confident of who he is and what he wants to be,
While she dwells in confusion, her embodiment an effigy,
Her mind in a haze of self degradation,
Thinking why would GOD put me in this situation,
Why must I be the bearer of difference,
When society hides it,sending me into repentance,
Mikey observes from the shadows, frowning in dismay,
willing mikayla to listen, to what he has to say,
There's no need for you to ask for forgiveness,
If you embrace who you are, love and happiness are endless,
If you open your eyes you will truly see,
That i am you and you are me,
Mikayla is numb because she cant understand,
Why she has to be the woman who knows she's a man
Realizing the complication of accepting this fact,
She bottles her truth and pretends to act,
As if nothing has changed, though her struggle remains,
While mikey sits in a stupor bound and chained,
She goes to therapy to gain some insight,
Hoping for a cure, or a guiding light,
Through her tunnel of turmoil she continues to fight,
Trying to banish poor mikey to the chill of the night,
She thinks of her family and what they might say,
All the what ifs of her life on display,
Wondering about judgement, will pride get in the way?
Will my dignity survive? Am i allowed to pray?
Will i still find love? does this make me gay?
How do you ask your parents to let go of their daughter,
And accept a son without becoming a martyr,
A spectacle,a display, or a practical joke,
If i become my true self, what drama will it provoke?
Mikayla is a ball of nerves, buried in her questions,
Until mikey appears when she looks at her reflection,
He nods at her and says "i know what your thinking,
You have to embrace me or continue sinking,
I need you to know without the slightest inkling,
That i've been here waiting from the very beginning,
Realize the risks are worth it in the end,
You'll be free of this burden, and born again,
In order to make this your new life's trend,
I have to emerge and your life has to end",
Then the effigy returns and mikey is gone,
Mikayla tries to make sense of what just went on,
Can i really do this? is there enough strength inside?
I wonder what it feels like to not have to hide?
Is it possible that i really am that bold,
To live as the man who lives in my soul,
Im not that sure but i have to try,
So i think its finally time to say goodbye,
Mikey smiles from inside as he looks in the mirror,
Loving his new life, seeing everything clearer,
All the blurred lines are more sense,
He's enjoying his transition, though it is intense,
Don't get it twisted bigots do exist,
And they're determined to make reality a myth,
A facade of the past where honesty is hidden,
Originality is shunned,differences forbidden,
Mikey knows the difference, he isn't concerned with negative opinions,
He surrounds himself with joy, that is his happy ending,
MY POINT IS SIMPLE, EVERYONE SHOULD BE ACCEPTED,
NO PERSON IGNORED, NO STORY NEGLECTED,
CHANGES COME,THEY SHOULD BE EXPECTED,
TRANS PEOPLE COUNT TOO AND ITS TIME WE RESPECT IT.
