“Ghosts of the Past”

I sit here tonight,
Very few familiar faces that I see.
Unknown eyes come with my sight,
But few stare back at me.
I am haunted by ghosts of the past,
Ghosts of things that once were,
Things that were built to last,
But – alas – no longer occur.
I used to be with my friends
All the time,
But slowly that ends,
By and by, drip by drip, leaving only grime
And a residue of what used to be.

Struggling to hold onto the past,
Hoping that things will go against the constant,
But that is not meant to be.
All things change, sometimes for the better.
This town is full of ghosts,
I can almost see them moving.
Sometimes you must let go in order to move on,
Because to live in the yesteryear will hold you back,
It will keep you waiting for something
That can never be fully ever again.
The past is the past;
It is best to remember it and move on:
Memories are pleasant, but
Living in the past is stagnation.
Forgot it not and live the lessons that it teaches you.

The past has already happened, but the future is what you
Make of it.
