Good Company

You put your hand on my leg
& so I pulled up my dress
You said "put it back down
"We're not there yet.
"I just want to watch
the air leave your chest
& hear the story you tell
the words on your breath."

Music was playing
You asked "do you dance?"
I laughed, & said not well
You said "give me a chance"
hands around my waist
beard next to my face
You took my two left feet
made me feel like Audrey
in Funny Face

Cinnamon whiskey
& honesty on our breath
riding that line
between lovers & friends
& you're like nothing
I'll ever see again
Keep looking back at me
Don't break the bind I'm in

If I stand close enough to you
I see a universe in your head
I knew minutes after meeting
You'd be moving this pen
You say that you're crazy
but you understand me
so at least if you're crazy
you're in good company

Sitting close on your couch
watching The Wonder years
playing bass to the theme song
& throwing out random fears
You kept looking at me
said "keep watching the show
I just want to watch you
cause I've seen this episode"

Taking me to your bedroom
watching me fall on the mattress
I looked at you coyly
from underneath my lashes
you watched me for a minute
then put your hand back on my leg
& said "you put that on for me
but it's time to take off your dress."
