The Greatest Lie

I have a tool at my disposal
It allows me to create
To deceive and manipulate
It will have you fooled
It's pretty cool

I know you've got it too
We use it on each other
It's the best way to cover
Sharing the art of concealing
Masking, not revealing

Although we have the same method in place
Still we choose not to see one trace
Of anything that could be hiding
Because then we'd both have to admit we're lying
And show our true face

But why would we go that route?
There's no benefit to truth
It's much easier to lie with smiles

I'll make you see what I want you to see
Misleading actions I'm convinced you won't perceive
And you're doing the same to me
So I can't fault you for it
But I know pain hides beneath

You tell your lies with magic
Transform thoughts and readapt them
It's a clever kind of tactic
With results that can be tragic
I tell myself the same lie
'It doesn't matter'

Oddly connected through disconnection
We've achieved mutual understanding here
It's a strange kind of clear
You're just functioning as society expects
And I'm joining you in unwillingness to express

Because why would I take that path
When you're not supposed to dwell on the past
It's much easier to lie with smiles

The best kind of expression
Is used for suppression
And so much repression
What are we doing?

It should be a positive reflection
Instead we use it for deception
How long can we keep pretending?
Tell me what are we doing?

We're ruining the definition of something so special
Just like we did with "love", a word with little meaning left at all
And what happens when it becomes the norm
To forget to appreciate it in its true form?

Maybe you shouldn't think about that fact
Retreat to your bubble where happiness stays in tact
It's easier to lie with beautiful smiles
And everybody likes it when you lie
