and you've had nothing to hide
with your silent tongue
mouthing things we couldn't bring
ourselves to understand
or interpret
wondering still what they were
wondering what you meant
after the words went
wondering if we've let you down

and I hope you realize from
wherever you are now
that we tried our best

on one late-autumn day

conferring with the dead
several feet from your bed
indiscernible to us when we came
