Regretful Forgiveness

Her apologies were dramatic.
Always involving a surplus of tears
Plentiful enough to fill buckets.

Her apologies arrived often
As if they shared a schedule
With New York City subways.

In hindsight, I wonder if
They were reserved for me,
Simply a part of her
planned manipulation.

Sometimes I wonder who
I might have become
if I had ignored these
grand gestures of hers.
