I wish you were
in the next room,
sleeping softly
with me close by
to hold your hand
when the dream shadows
upset you.

I wish my shoulder
for you to cry on
was just
a doorway away.

just six steps from here
(and only three if I stride)
so I could surprise
you at the entryway
and see your face
swell with laughter and smiles
that fill up your eyes
with dancing lights
