A Bullet

A handful of things you once touched
encompass me in this ash and dust
broken down here in this place
that brings me back to us
Alone again as I fall to the floor
You sent me your lips
a blameless kiss on an envelope
Your words written in stitches
anchored
to the seams of my bones
Keeping me still
there in the calm
My sweet girl
almost forgot
Loving still in simplicity
a prodigy in my world

I couldn't seem to force myself
I did not want to feel
The space between us as you left
You broke my heart or I guess
It depends on how you look at it
Some might say I broke it myself
Either way
You could've spared me instead
honored my last wish and used a bullet
Clean shot
One hit

You closed the door
unable to forgive
the mistakes
that I made
So I wandered
late night city streets
drowning in the rain
I pushed you away
to the back of my mind
into an abandoned space
I tried to forget this disabling pain
to think of you only distantly
Like it was only a story I read
about heart break

A fiction novel with an ending so bad
you were sure the author made a mistake
