The One That Got Away
I know, I know
I've made some mistakes in the past.
And I know, I know
You live, you learn, and you grow
And I know, I know
Your past doesn’t define you.
And I know, I know
What you do in the future makes you.
I know, I know
When you look at me
You see, you see
All the fragmented pieces that puzzle you.
I try, I try
Piece by piece
Inch by inch
To let you piece me
This mystery, confined within this box.
With the picture displayed,
But the puzzle don’t fit together.
It’s not the same.
And I know, I know
You get frustrated
With all the puzzle pieces that make me.
But I know, I know
You tried, you tried
And you thought, you thought
You had me figured.
But only to see me crumble
With the slightest missteps you’ve made.
The same steps I’ve took,
You tried to follow.
But I couldn’t afford to give you the chance to build me
And for you to break me again.
So you cried, you cried
And so did I
And I know you died, you died
That part of you where love lived.
Sunshine and rainbows.
And you saw, you saw
Me for who I really am.
This silly girl,
Puzzled and put together by the world.
So you saw, you saw
All the mistakes that I’ve made
And you saw, you saw
That I haven’t learned, and I haven’t grown.
Not into the woman that you could be with for eternity.
And you saw, you saw
The pitfalls that are me
The cracks and crevasses that used to be flesh.
Now replaced by holes and darkness.
And that my past was bound to be my future
An ever ending cycle of deconstruct and reconstruct.
So the cycle, the cycle
You tried to avoid.
But I wouldn't let you.
I had this void
Now is emptier without you.
But you see, you see.
I hope to learn and I hope to grow
So that I won’t make the same mistakes, I did with you.
I've made some mistakes in the past.
And I know, I know
You live, you learn, and you grow
And I know, I know
Your past doesn’t define you.
