Too often we’ve settled
For superficial
Acknowledgment
Confusing it with real love
As we’re left picking up the pieces
Of our naïve hearts
In the polluted unsheathed sheets
Of a stranger’s bed
Wondering why we could not love
Or be loved
I want to awaken
In an accustomed bed
With more than just
The impression of a heart
Beside me
Real love takes time
Love was a stranger
Until you climbed inside me,
Understanding the depths of my soul
Occupying every crevice of every crease
Of my existence
And caressed me
Synchronized your heart
In rhythm
And beat with me
Intertwined your roots
In my epitome
You began to exist within me
Two worlds
One heart
One breath
One being
For superficial

Confusing it with real love
As we’re left picking up the pieces
Of our naïve hearts
In the polluted unsheathed sheets
Of a stranger’s bed
Wondering why we could not love
