Growing Greek
The study of ancient Greek culture will always be useful in the present time. The first reason is the importance of art and literature. Another reason is to understand how to govern a democracy. A third reason is to understand how philosophical beliefs shape a society .The past is what the present must use to reflect upon itself.
The importance of art and literature in ancient Greece explains how social change happens. Homeric values shaped thinkers like Pericles. The essence of a society is expressed through it’s art. This essence is molded by literature. The speech Pericles gives inspired wide social change. So by studying ancient Greek culture we teach ourselves how to create changes within ourselves. The changes we must make are identified in the expression of art.
The ancient Greeks show two entirely different approaches to governing. The idea of democracy was born in Athens. So how we approach democracy will logically best be understood by studying the original idea. The idea of democracy is only understood with contrast. This contrast is found in ancient Sparta. The Spartans were warriors who worked only for Sparta’s security.
The difference in philosophical beliefs between ancient Sparta and Athens is important. The reason it’s so important Is we see how the approaches we take with thoughts translate to our lifestyle’s nature. The people of ancient Athens quest for knowledge gave men equality regardless of wealth. Ancient Athenians founded the method for science. The Spartan’s philosophy of selflessness is shown in every time they were in a battle. There is much we can learn from each polis’s philosophy. If we combine the two together we will have a better society today. When we begin to seek knowledge for ourselves to gain understanding we balance power among ourselves.
The study of ancient Greek culture shows us today all that we need to improve. These two great city states show us what we need to adopt the selfless seeking of knowledge. The way we share this is through literature and art. This is the brings us to the a better way for us to govern ourselves. The ancient Greeks are the best teaching tool today. If we stop studying this culture then this knowledge will lost needlessly. So we are saving ourselves from having to repeat both cultures mistakes. That is why we must process the past presently. There is no other way we can produce progress in the present.
