My Life Rhymes

I started off life not so boring
Hardly able to get up for school in the morning
Has all these thoughts of the past, present, and future
stuck in my head, they put me in a stupor
Thoughts of my dad
and I always was glad
to see him
but now I know I never wanna grow up to be him
because half the time he has a needle in his arm
Half the druggy as the alcoholic he’d been
When I was eight
I realized too late
What the drugs were doing when he OD
on some heroine
and my mom wasn't no heroine
she was on another smack
while we were flat
broke
on our back
a joke
Spilling mac’n’cheese on the floor
oh mamma please don’t cry anymore
me and my brother don’t need to eat tonight
but in spite what I said
We picked up and cleaned that mac
you did what you did
But soon I learned I had a knack
for poetry
So I wrote with these rhymes
and in church we sang hymns
but only on Easter and Christmas
I wasn't really a believer just needed something
to get me through the day
with the roaches on the wall
and the people in the halls
and my step-father pulling a shotgun out on us all
but she still stuck with him

but I can’t complain
I still got my arms and legs
and fingers to play and to write my music
and someday I’ll use it
to give the family that I make and hold together some money
and do something with it.
