Partisan Blades
They ruled under quartered moons and a pale sun,
while their pulses throbbed and ebbed with the tides.
They licked their blades with scarred tongues,
impatient for the flow, drunk on bloodlust.
Cold steel dispersed in rolling bursts,
faster than storm clouds, hoofbeats rained drumfire.
The black mud churned with rabid foam that flew
from the mouths of filthy war hounds.

Your poem kept making me think about mongol hordes, apoctalyptic horsemen, and then Israel...

I guess Israel is on people's minds now. I wrote this thinking about being a bloodthirsty warrior from older times. Battle on horseback seems to make more sense... not necessarily noble, but hard work nonetheless.

Thank you, whale. It was inspired by the phrases 'blood moon' and 'April blood' by the WidowFrost from *gasp*! Another poetry site.

My Friend,
Your imagery is very vivid...both intense, and unique. I felt as if i had been transported through time... into the realm of this advancing, unrelenting army of barbaric warriors.
My mind was filled with a very disturbing picture of a warrior, running his sword through a resisting opponent...then in a wild frenzy, removing the blade, cleaning it with his tongue--enjoying the repeated ritual. ( WELL DONE, actually!!)
To paraphrase Julius Caesar---They came...they saw...they conquered!!!

Well, your version of it is quite the thrill!
Mine was this: impatient for first bloodspill, before they engaged the enemy, they licked the blades of their weapons, cut their tongues, tasted blood (hence the scarred tongues)...
Thank you, Enchantress...

I just watched King Arthur and these lines really resonated with the fierceness of such a battle…
They licked their blades with scarred tongues,
impatient for the flow, drunk on bloodlust.
Really enjoyed this Atakti!!
