gent chats me up in style; but having drunk
my pint I beg his pardon...you're successful in
the City..? that's nice, I smile...

I read this piece through..several times, and i still feel the same sentiments...
why wouldn't he
be 'doing well'--
after all,
he did manage to finish
a pint
he didn't have to pay for(?):/

oh, I see...he was trying to impress me
with how successful he was in the city,
how well off he was, as a selling point...
I found it charming and, as I said, flattering...
but thought it best to leave without hurting
his feelings...
