Keep the Memory

Said I wasn't good enough for you
but you couldn't let me go
held on, but didn't know what you held onto
never could imprison my soul
and now I've flown away from your clutches
maybe you'll wither without my light
but all weeds have to die

telling me not to live my destiny
is like asking a bird not to spread its wings
forbidding a fish from swimming
tie my hands behind my back but I'll still sing
don't you question it, this isn't another phase
may the sun always shine its rays upon you
but if you bring me down may there be darkness too
maybe you need to learn how it feels to get burned
before you'll treat me right
consider this a warning, I set sail at the dawning
and if in time you realize what you were holding
you can keep the memory

Said I wouldn't make it on my own
but you hated that I was bold
kept on, but didn't know what you were keeping in
never could take my ambition
and now I've escaped from your dungeons
maybe you'll finally see the light
but this star deserved to shine

telling me not to live my destiny
is like asking a bird not to spread its wings
forbidding a fish from swimming
tie my hands behind my back but I'll still sing
don't you question it, this isn't another phase
may the sun always shine its rays upon you
but if you bring me down may there be darkness too
maybe you need to learn how it feels to get burned
before you'll treat me right
consider this a warning, I set sail at the dawning
and if in time you realize what you were holding
you can keep the memory

just don't think you can keep me
