Uninvited
I came, without asking, into your room last night
I needed to check on you, to see you, for myself
Thankfully you were away somewhere, off in a dream
With no idea I was there or had woven this spell
After watching you sleep for quite a long time
I realized that my being there was all wrong
You hadn't invited me there where you sleep
So I turned to leave, and I was almost gone
But before I could go, I had to turn for that one last look
For one final glimpse of your beautiful face
As my finger gently traced the outline of your cheek
That’s when I realized your eyes were awake
I rushed to turn away, afraid you had seen me
With a look of confusion, you sat up and quietly spoke
I know this trip had been wrong; I told myself “Just GO!”
I should have left right then but I didn’t - I just froze
As I listened I realized your words were a prayer
I just stood and listened to your words, as if invited
Shattering your privacy, looking into your soul
I was suddenly aware that you had gone quiet
I looked up and your eyes locked onto mine
You asked if I was the angel you had asked God for
I nodded a no; the guilt of invasion ate away at my heart
I had no right to be here, no right at all!
As I started to fade out of your sight and leave you in peace
I saw that you looked scared and that hurt me to see
So I went back and smiled at you and touched your face
“I’m just a dream, there’s no need at all to fear me”
Then you laid back down, looking peaceful again
With a faint smile that lingered on your face
Just as I turned to fade out and leave
I heard you say “Of you, I could never be afraid”
I needed to check on you, to see you, for myself
Thankfully you were away somewhere, off in a dream
With no idea I was there or had woven this spell
