Pink memories

Memories are like painted toes
Bright and new
To begin
But as the time goes
Both memories and toes
Lose their glow
They chip and they fade
Both painted pink toes
And memories of you
Fade away

I'm painting my toes today
There isn't much left of the old
Most all have weathered away
Both memories and toes
Started to fade
Long before it turned cold

I remember the day
It was warm
I painted them fast
We had plans --
On the day before
We met last

I chose the color for you
I thought it the perfect hue
I doubt you even knew
But I didn't want to forget
So I hid them away in my shoes
All these months
I locked them away
Not wanting to face
How memories of you
Like pretty pink shades;
soon chip and fade

It's strange to realize how time
Eventually brings us to change
And finally force me to find
Another brilliant new shade

I painted them pink just for you
But that was way back then
Today I'm painting them blue
And soon I'll paint them again
Maybe by then I'll forget
Pretty Pink memories of you
